Rain sensor, camera or head-up display: why your new windshield has to match

Your windshield may carry more than glass. Here is what can be built in, and why we ask about it.

By Aztec Auto Glass ·

Many newer windshields have a rain/light sensor, a camera or a head-up display built in, and the replacement glass has to match them.

That is why we ask which sensors your windshield has, and for your VIN on 2015 and newer vehicles.

What can be built into a windshield?

  • Rain/light sensor. Senses rain and light, so your wipers and lights can switch on by themselves.
  • Lane departure warning system. A camera near the mirror that watches the lane lines.
  • Humidity sensor. Senses moisture on the glass.
  • Heads-up display. Shows your speed and other information on the windshield, right in front of you.
  • Heated wipers. A heated area of the glass where the wipers rest.

Why does the new glass have to match?

Many vehicles come with more than one version of windshield. Which one fits depends on what is built in. The wrong version may not fit your sensors or camera, so we match the glass before we order it.

How do I know what mine has?

Look at the glass around your rear-view mirror. A small box or camera there usually means a sensor. Not sure? That is fine. In our quote you can tap “I’m not sure”, and your VIN lets us find out exactly.

Why do you ask for my VIN?

On 2015 and newer vehicles, the sensors alone do not always tell the versions apart, so we ask for your VIN. A VIN only describes your vehicle. It does not give us any personal information. It is the same thing any body shop or mechanic needs to see to know the exact part your vehicle uses.

Where do I find my VIN?

It is 17 letters and numbers. Look through the bottom corner of the windshield on the driver’s side, on the sticker on the driver’s door frame, or on your registration or insurance papers.

What if you do not have my part?

If a part is not in our system yet, one of our team contacts you to finish your quote, by call and email. If you want to book, we set it up on the call. If not, your quote is still emailed to you.
